Support for Helping Someone in Distress
The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline provides free, 24/7 assistance and compassionate support via phone, text, chat and deaf/HoH options.
If someone you know is struggling emotionally or having a hard time, you can be the difference in getting them the help they need. It’s important to take care of yourself when you are supporting someone through a difficult time, as this may bring up difficult emotions. If it does, 988 provides help to for support you.
Project Hope is a relief organization with global reach. It offers a helpful list of five steps to help someone in emotional distress.
Coach Those Impacted by Federal Layoffs
The Grounded Idealist is looking for coaches with a range of backgrounds, including, but not limited to: leadership, executive, career, life, wellness, somatic and trauma-informed coaching.
Participating coaches agree to offer (a minimum of) three free coaching sessions (per client) to individuals who meet the criteria above.
Free coaching is provided to former federal employees, contractors, implementing partners, as well as staff from multilateral agencies, universities and nonprofits who are unemployed because of federal workforce reductions, and any anyone concerned they may be in the near future.
Scholarship Selection Volunteers
Since 1986, FEEA has given more than 11,000 merit-based scholarships to federal public servants, their spouses, children, and grandchildren and nearly 200 scholarships to surviving children whose federal employee parents died or were severely injured in the line of duty during terrorist attacks.
Each year FEEA receives almost 3,000 college scholarship applications.
You can volunteer as an application reviewer to help review, score and rank applicants.
Opportunities for Lawyers
Lawyers who join the Federal Workers Legal Defense Network provide pro bono support for federal workers who have been fired or have concerns about their employment rights. Lawyers receive training to help workers understand their rights and legal options.
Time commitments range from:
- Short screening calls
- One-hour consultations
